Continuing Education Overview

To Begin

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) requires all licensees in this state to complete Continuing Education in order for their licenses to remain active. A licensee has the choice of completing the required hours either in a classroom environment, online, or as a home study program.

Please note that Illinois is a proctored state so all exams must be completed at a pre-approved school.

Continuing Education Requirements

To help determine how many hours of continuing education credits a sales or broker licensee will need, please read below. You will fit into one of the following categories:

CURRENT SALESPERSONS' 2-YEAR RENEWAL PERIOD: May 1, 2007 through April 30, 2009

FOR NEW LICENSEES: If you’ve been licensed for less than two years, your Continuing Education hours are determined by the date of issuance through the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulations (IDFPR). To determine that date, please click here. Type in the last/first name of the individual and click “Search”.  Then, double-click on the licensee’s name for the date of issuance:
  1. If a licensee receives their initial sales license between May 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009, they are exempt from c.e.
  2. If a licensee receives their initial license between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008, they will need 6 hours of c.e. (3 hrs. CORE is required; the remaining 3 hrs. can be CORE or Elective).
  3. If you mailed your sales renewal form to IDFPR for the last renewal period ending April 30, 2007, you will need 12 hours of CE by April 30, 2009 (6 hours of CORE and 6 hours Elective)

CURRENT BROKERS’ 2-YEAR RENEWAL PERIOD: May 1, 2006 through April 30, 2008

  1. If you are Licensed as a Broker AND NOT PREVIOUSLY LICENSED AS A SALESPERSON, between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008, you will need 6 hours of Broker Management due within 180 days of licensure.
  2. If you are Licensed as a Broker AND NOT PREVIOUSLY LICENSED AS A SALESPERSON, between May 1, 2006 and April 30, 2007, you will need 12 hours of c.e. (6 hrs. Brokerage Management course, 3 hrs. of CORE and the remaining 3 hrs. can be CORE or Elective).
  3. Brokers, PREVIOUSLY LICENSED AS A SALESPERSON, will need 18 hours of c.e. by April 30, 2008 (6 hrs. Brokerage Management course, 6 hrs. CORE and 6 hrs. Elective).
  4. If you mailed your Brokers’ renewal form to OBRE for the last renewal period ending April 30, 2006, you will need 18 hours of c.e. by April 30, 2008
(6 hrs. Brokerage Management course, 6 hrs. CORE and 6 hrs. Elective).
