Our Association exists because REALTORS® cooperate and strive to serve the needs of the broader REALTOR® Community. The taproot of all our political efforts is the “Government Affairs Committee.” This Committee, one sitting in the South suburbs and one in the North, monitor the political pulse as well as drafting and executing our political policy. With a firm gaze on the goals of an open marketplace and preserving property rights the Government Affairs Committee brings your best interests to the table in dozens of issues each year.
While our Association strives to work in the spirit of cooperation through dialogue, this is also the place where our association decides to begin legal action defend your business and your client’s interests.
To join the Government Affairs Committee you must be a REALTOR® member of the Association, a supporter of RPAC, and actively engaged in our political process (writing to officials, sharing your experiences, educating your clients) and willing to set aside your “company hat” to work for the common good of all REALTORS®. Village Home Inspections
Many of our local towns have passed ordinances requiring pre-sale home inspections. A list of these towns is available here. Intrusive inspections, which do not respect a homeowners constitutional right to be free of government search and seizure and which subject home sellers to large fees and open-ended inspections, must be fought. In some towns, REALTORS® have found village inspectors who have held up closings based on cosmetic issues, such as the condition of the property or yard, in addition to public health issues such as the installation of smoke detectors. We are fighting to limit such ordinances. Recent court cases promise to better clarify the definition of public health.
REALTOR® Capitol Conference
Once a year REALTORS® attend a walk through like nothing else: The corner of South Second and East Capitol Avenue, Springfield. At the Capitol Conference, MORe will drive you to Springfield, brief you on the issues and give you an opportunity to tell your Senator or Representative how the bills before them will affect you and your clients. The date for the 2009 Capitol Conference is Tuesday, March 10th.
