Help Your Clients Buy and Sell During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is coming up fast. You may find clients uncertain of whether to proceed with buying or selling a home now that Thanksgiving is already on the horizon. But, especially given this year’s market, they shouldn’t give up so quickly.

After a slow start to the summer market this year, the homebuying season is stretching well into fall. With the number of homes going under contract in September well above where it was last year, you can expect to see continued demand over the next few months.

You can work with your homeseller clients to make the most of this demand. During the holiday season, that means finding a balance where festive decor is inviting but not overwhelming. It’s important that prospective buyers can visualize themselves in a space. Tell homesellers that they can still decorate their homes, but should keep  decorations light so buyers can easily walk through and appreciate all the features.

Curb appeal also remains key during the holidays — and can require some extra upkeep in the fall and winter. Make sure your clients are regularly raking the leaves or shoveling snow, especially on walkways.

Buyers may be reluctant to take the time to tour homes during the holidays, but those who do could reap the rewards of shopping in the off season. While there will be fewer homes to see than at the height of summer, they are less likely to encounter a multiple-offer situation.

REALTORS®, given the shifted buying season this year, now is not the time for a long vacation. Your clients may have questions about buying and selling at this time of year, but a lot of them are ready to make a move and will want to get started. Make the time for them over the next few months and you should have plenty to do for the rest of the year.
