Mainstreet CEO Statement on Abolition of AFFH

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced the termination of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) provision of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS® CEO John Gormley RCE, CAE, CIPS issued a statement regarding the abolition of AFFH.

“The Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS® firmly denounces the HUD’s move to terminate the AFFH provision, as it hampers progress being made toward building more inclusive, affordable and equitable communities throughout the country and here in Illinois,” said MORe CEO John Gormley. “Now more than ever, we need to be doing everything in our power to support minorities, the elderly, those with disabilities and lower-income workers. These individuals and their families are not only being hit hardest by the pandemic, but have also historically faced the most significant barriers to housing opportunities. These two issues are intertwined. We must work together to strengthen our communities by continuing to make housing and homeownership accessible to all."
